I. Basic UOnline Information: Admission Procedures, Academic Calendar, Tuition & Financial Aid and Course Information

Admissions

University of Utah students may enroll for UOnline courses. If you are not a U of U student and would like to take UOnline courses, please visit the University of Utah home page and point your mouse to Future Student and choose Admissions Office for admission information and procedures. If you have any questions about admissions, please contact the U of U Admissions Office at (801) 581-7281

UOnline Follows U of U Academic Calendar

UOnline courses follow the University of Utah semester schedules. For semester schedules, please visit the U of U home page and point your mouse to Students, choose Academic Calendar and click the semester whose schedule you wish to view.

Registration

Students register for online courses using the U of U Campus Information System (CIS), the same registration system for on-campus courses. If you have any questions about Campus Information System’s course registration system, please call Registration at (801) 581-8969.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It takes about 24 hours after course registration before the course will appear on both the Uonline site and course interface system such as WebCT. Course access begins on the first day of class. For course access information, please read section II of this help guide.

Exams

Most UOnline courses require that you take paper-based exams on either Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings during regular exam weeks. A few courses require that you take exams on Thursday evenings only. Final exams take place on either one or two available exam dates.

Tuition & Fees

The tuition schedule for online courses is the same as on-campus courses. However, UOnline charges a $25 special fee for each online course for maintaining the operation of UOnline, which includes computer servers, equipment, staff support and exam administration that most online classes require. Financial Aid Information

Online students follow the same policies and procedures for financial aid as on-campus students. For financial aid information please visit the home page of The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships or contact them at (801) 581-6211 (NOTE: You can find the above web site and other important U of U web sites at the University of Utah’s home page).

UOnline Course Information: Course Content and Textbooks

For information about specific UOnline courses, click UOnline Course Catalog found under Catalog and Schedules on the UOnline home page and click on the name of the online course. If the course information is not available or needs to be updated, please contact the academic department that offers the course. For academic department contact information, please visit the U of U home page and click A-Z Index to select the department’s home page.

Textbooks

Many UOnline courses require textbooks. To see a particular course requires one or more textbooks, please visit the U of U Bookstore’s web site or call them at 801-581-6326. When looking for textbooks for online courses, please make sure you search for books by the course catalog and section number. For example, if you are taking the online Intermediate Algebra course search for the textbook under Math 1010, section 090.

If the U of U Bookstore does not list any textbooks for the online course you are taking, please visit the UOnline home page, click UOnline Course Catalog and then click the name of the course to see if textbook information is provided. If you do not find any textbook information, please contact the academic department that offers the course. For academic department contact information, please visit the U of U web site, click A-Z index found near the top of the page and click the name of the academic department.

II. Registration Procedures for Online Courses

Step 1: You must be admitted to the University of Utah in order to take UOnline courses.

Step 2: Go to the U of U Campus Information System to register for UOnline course(s).

Step 3: Wait at least 24 hours before verifying that the class appears on both the UOnline web site, and WebCT.

NOTE: Course access actually begins on the first day of class!

Also remember that your contact information is obtained from the U of U Campus Information System, so make sure it is correct to assure you receive all university correspondence, especially via email. If you use a spam checker, please make sure it accepts messages from the utah.edu domain (e.g. info@uonline.utah.edu). If your spam checker uses white listing (i.e. requires senders to reply with additional information), configure it to accept the utah.edu domain directly.

III: How To Access your Online Course

Step 1: Login to the UOnline system on the UOnline home page at http://uonline.utah.edu by entering your UNID (use a lower case u) and password.

If you encounter login difficulties, please click “Login Problems” link found under the login button on the left side of the UOnline Home page and carefully follow the instructions.

Step 2: After successfully logging in, if the current semester does not appear near the top of the page, click on the semester name found under User Menu on the left side of the page.

Step 3: Near the top of the page, click button “CLICK HERE For My (Name of Semester) Courses”. You should see a summary of your course(s).

Step 4: Click on the "CLICK HERE TO ACCESS COURSE" link which will take you to WebCT or to a departmental course delivery system. Read and follow the login instructions found on the WebCT page or departmental page. If you have problems with WebCT please click Check Brower near the upper right corner on the WebCT page, prior to logging in, and make sure all items are checked. If all items are not checked, carefully following the instructions to make your browser compatible with WebCT.

IV. Examination Procedures for On-line Courses

Testing Procedures for Local Students (Living 20 Miles or Less From U of U Campus or a U of U Extension Site)

(a) Exam Sign Up Procedures

Online courses require students to register for each exam through the UOnline system. For exam schedule information, visit the UOnline home page and click UOnline exam schedule found under the semester name under Catalogs and Schedules. NOTE: UOnline provides exam schedules during the first week of each semester.

Exam Locations, Days and Times: Please read the general exam location and time schedule below. For specific exam dates for your online course, please click on “UOnline exam Schedules” found under Catalogs and Schedules on the UOnline home page at http://uonline.utah.edu, or check the course syllabus.

Final Exams Dates: Final exams for UOnline courses take place during U of U finals week. For specific final exam dates for the online courses you are taking, please view your instructor’s syllabus or click UOnline Exam Schedules found under Catalogs and Schedules on the UOnline home page.

When to Register for Exams

You will need to register for your exams at least two weeks prior to the first available exam date, which falls on a Thursday during regular exams weeks. If possible, please register for all exams as soon as possible. Please note, however, that final exam registration is not available until the third week into the semester.

Please follow the steps below to register for your exams

Step 1: Login to the UOnline system on the UOnline home page at http://uonline.utah.edu using your UNID and password. Your UNID begins with a lower case u followed by the last 7 digits of your student ID number.

If you encounter login difficulties, make sure you type a lower case u when typing your uNID. If you continue to experience problems, please click “Login Problems?” found under the login button on the left side of the page and follow the instructions.

If you still experience login problems after following the above instructions, please e-mail Uonline at info@uonline.utah.edu

Step 2: If the current semester does not appear near the top of the page, click on the semester name found under User Menu on the left side of the page.

Step 3: Click the second button found under the name of the name of the semester near the top of the page. The button reads, “CLICK HERE For My (Name of Semester)” .

Step 4: Click on the Sign Up button found to the right of the exam you wish to sign up for.

Step 5: Use the drop down menu to choose an exam location.

Step 6: Choose an exam time by clicking one of the Sign Up buttons that corresponds to your preferred exam date and time.

Materials Allowed for Exams

Instructors decide whether or not to allow certain materials during examinations and publish this information in their online courses. If you have any questions regarding whether or not certain materials are allowed for your exam, please e-mail your instructor.

Regarding Calculators:

If your exam indicates the use of a calculator is permitted during the exam, you may only use a non-graphing calculator/mathematic scientific calculator. Students are only permitted to use graphing/graphic calculators if the exam explicitly states "graphing calculator". Mobile phones and personal data assistance's (PDA’s), such as palm pilots, hand spring, had held PC's, etc., are NEVER permitted during an exam. Materials allowed for use during exams can be view in the UOnline system under the Course Exams/Exam Registration utility.

(b) Testing Rules

UOnline requires that all students follow the rules listed below:

  • Only online students taking exams are allowed in the exam room.
  • Students are not allowed to leave the exam room prior to completion of their exam(s).
  • Students must have at least one empty seat between them and other students taking exams.
  • Students must place all non-exam materials under their seats.
  • Students must turn off mobile phones before taking exams, and mobile phones are never allowed for use during an exam.

Violation of the above testing rules are noted on the student's exam and reported to the course instructor.

(c) Testing Procedures for Out-of-Area Students (Living 20 Miles or More from the U of U Campus or One of the U of U Extension Sites)

UOnline requires that online students comply with all procedures and policies governing out-of-area exams. The UOnline testing coordinator will contact instructors of students who fail to comply with all procedures and policies.

Carefully read and follow the documentation below.

1. Acceptable & Unacceptable Proctors

As an out-of-area student, you must find a proctor to administer your exams using the list of the types of proctors UOnline will accept.

When searching for potential proctors, make sure they are not relatives, friends, coworkers, clergy, someone who doesn't speak fluent English or someone who does not have or is not willing to use a business phone, fax or e-mail address.

Acceptable Proctors Include:

  • Proctors at university, college or junior college testing centers (testing fee usually required per exam.)
  • Independent study offices of universities or colleges (testing fee usually required)
  • Head librarians of public or academic libraries. (usually, no fee required) NOTE: You are required to find a proctor who will keep you within his or her field of vision during the entire duration of all examinations.
  • Professional proctoring services (testing fee usually required.)
  • If you are enlisted in the U.S. military, you may choose a proctor at a military education office (usually, no fee required).

Unacceptable Proctors Include, but is Not Limited to:

* Relatives (in-laws included)
* Friends and coworkers (including supervisors)
* Clergy
* Proctors without business phone, fax and email
* Someone who does not speak English.

List of Proctors We Have Previously Rejected:

  • Librarians who are too busy to be attentive to your exam or who cannot ensure that you remain within his or her field of vision during the entire exam
  • Proctors who refuse to fax completed exams to UOnline. NOTE: UOnline require students to find proctors who will fax completed finals exams to UOnline. Students living outside the lower 48 states must find proctors who fax all completed exams to UOnline.(please see #2 for more details.)
  • Proctors who don’t have business e-mail addresses (please see #2 below or more details.)
  • University and college professors (not included in the list of acceptable proctors.)
  • High school teachers (not included in the list of acceptable proctors.)

2. Procedures for Finding a Proctor

Step 1: Contact potential proctors by phone or in-person.
Step 2: Make sure the proctor will comply with all UOnline proctor procedures listed below.

  • Proctor must keep you within his or her field of vision during the entire duration of all exterminations.
  • Proctor must fax completed final exam to UOnline and must make a photocopy of it to keep on file for at least 30 days.
  • UOnline strongly encourages students to find proctors who will make photocopies of all exams and file them for at least one month, just in case an exam gets lost in the mail. UOnline is not responsible for exams that get lost in the mail.
  • Proctor must mail the exam to UOnline. UOnline provides proctor with a pre-paid, self-addressed UOnline envelopes.

Student Living Outside Lower 48 States

  • If you are a student living outside the lower 48 states, the proctor must fax all completed exams to UOnline before mailing it.
  • If you are a student living outside the lower 48 states, you must provide an envelope and pay postage expenses so your proctor can mail your completed exam to UOnline.

Step 3: After you find a proctor who meets all UOnline requirements, ask him or her for the following information, write it down for later exam registration and double check all information to ensure accuracy.

  • First and last name of proctor.
  • Proctor’s job title
  • Proctor’s business mailing address
  • Proctor’s business telephone number
  • Proctor’s business fax number
  • Proctor’s business e-mail address

4. Exam Sign Up Procedures for Out of Area Students

When To Sign Up for Exams

With the exception of final exams, UOnline requires that you register for all exams at least two weeks prior to the first exam’s scheduled date. Before doing so, however, make sure your proctor will be able to administer all exams on their scheduled exam dates. If you plan to use more than one proctor, e-mail the testing coordinator at jeff.hullinger@m.cc.utah.edu.

Exam Registration Steps

Step 1: Using your uNID and password, login to the UOnline system on the UOnline home page at http://uonline.utah.edu Your uNID begins with a lower case u followed by the last 7 digits of your student ID number.

If you encounter login difficulties, please click “Login Problems?” found beneath the login button on the left side of page and follow the instructions.

Step 2: If the current semester does not appear near the top of the page, click on the semester name found under User Menu on the left side of the page.

Step 3: Click the second button found under the name of the semester near the top of the page. The button reads, “CLICK HERE For My (Name of Semester)".

Step 4: Click on the sign up button found to the right of the exam you wish to sign up for.

Step 5: Click the button that reads, “Out of Area Sign Up." After doing so, carefully read the out of area exam sign up requirements, and then click the Accept button if you agree with the requirements.

Step 6: Complete the true or false quiz regarding out of are exam regarding proctor policies and press the submit button. If you need to review proctor policies, click the Show Policy button found above the true or false quiz.

Step 7: Enter all fields of the proctor form and make sure all information is complete and accurate and then press the submit button.

Step 8: If you would like to use the same proctor for all of your course’s exams, press the Register For All Exams button. If you wish to register only for the course’s exam you chose, click the Register For This Exam Only button. You are now registered for your exam(s).

The Uonline Student Support Specialist will verify your proctor and will send the to your proctor if he or she is a proctor Uonline can approve. If your proctor was not approved, you will receive an e-mail about it, and your instructor will receive a copy of the e-mail.

UOnline Testing Coordinator Proctor Approval Procedures

After you register for your exams, the UOnline Testing Coordinator
will receive an e-mail generated by a computer program stating that you have registered for an exam. The UOnline Testing Coordinator will then verify the proctor information you submitted to UOnline by using reliable information sources.

3. Exam Procedures After Proctor Has Been Approved

  • UOnline testing coordinator mails exam, proctor verification form and UOnline return address envelope to your proctor.
  • UOnline testing coordinator e-mails you about your exam being mailed to your proctor and other important information and reminders.
  • UOnline testing coordinator e-mails exam details and procedures your proctor

4. After You Complete Exam

  • The proctor must complete and sign the proctor verification form.
  • For final exams, the proctor must make a copy of your completed exam to keep on file for at least 30 days and must also fax the exam to UOnline.
  • Proctor mails exams Outside and Inside Lower 48 States:. NOTE: For students living inside lower 48 states, the proctor mails completed exam using self-addressed, pre-paid envelope. Students living outside lower 48 states must provide the proctor with a blank envelope so he or she can mail the completed exams to UOnline and must also pay postage expenses.
